Baltic Circle | Philipp Gehmacher:

my shapes, your words, their grey

Open Spaces 2015#3

Gehmacher´s work my shapes, your words, their grey consists of an exhibition and performances at Sinne. There is also a workshop related to the work.

“What is grey life?” is one of the questions addressed by Philipp Gehmacher in his delicate work my shapes, your words, their grey, which oscillates between visual arts, performance and lecture.

For Gehmacher grey is not a non-colour. Grey accepts all colours. Grey is an almost utopian state, way beyond neutrality and far removed from pathos. Grey unfolds into a place of presentation beyond the white cube and the black box. Form, text, movement and the subtle use of Gérald Kurdian’s sound landscape result in an extremely effectual state of limbo.

Philipp Gehmacher lives in Vienna and works internationally. He is a choreographer, dancer and student at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in the Sculpture and Space programme. His works on gesture, space and touch have featured in numerous festivals and venues around the world. He has collaborated across art forms, most importantly with the choreographer Meg Stuart. Gehmacher initiated the lecture performance series walk+talk and is currently focusing on objects and sculpture. His latest work Die Dinge der Welt was presented at steirischer herbst festival in Austria in October 2016. He received the renowned Jerwood Choreography Award and the Austrian Advancement Award for Dance from the Federal Chancellery of Austria.

Gérald Kurdian is a musician, performer and radio artist. He studied visual arts at the ENSAPC before entering the contemporary dance program ex.e.r.ce 07 – CCNMLR under the direction of Mathilde Monnier and Xavier Le Roy.
His oblique concerts, such as Royal Gala (2005), 1999 (2009), and Les Îles Artificielles (2015), are joyful opportunities to invent synergies between electronic music practices, performance art and documentary and are regularly presented in the contexts of performing arts, visual arts or indie music. Kurdian is currently developing a new performance project HOT BODIES (Stand up) about electronic music and sexuality and tours as an electronic music artist under the name of TRK_X.

TRK_X is playing a solo gig, HOT BODIES OF THE FUTURE, at Love me in November Club in Cirko´s Maneesi on Wednesday, 16th of November at.

Materiality, Objects and the Moving Body (workshop)
In this encounter with the artist and choreographer Philipp Gehmacher, notions of materiality will be reflected upon in relation to the body, movement and physicality. Gehmacher’s current works will be a starting point to the investigation of the relationship between the subject of the performer, materials, objects, and their inherent autonomy. Last but not least, concerns of performance taking place in galleries or theatres will be addressed and explored.
